On 8 March, the Kiwanis Young Professionals UK will celebrate the launch of another community book exchange as part of its growing Little Library initiative. The new installation will be located at Rounds Green Methodist Church in the West Midlands, continuing a mission that is already making a meaningful difference across local neighbourhoods.
The Little Library project is inspired by the global Little Free Library movement: small, publicly accessible book cabinets where anyone can take a book, leave a book, and share the joy of reading.
For Kiwanis Young Professionals UK, the initiative is about more than books. It focuses on three core goals:
By placing libraries in welcoming community spaces, the project removes barriers to reading and encourages lifelong learning.

Access to books plays a critical role in a child’s development. Regular reading supports:
Unfortunately, not every household has easy access to books. Community libraries like these help bridge that gap, ensuring that every child has the opportunity to explore stories and knowledge.
The initiative also strengthens neighbourhood bonds. Residents engage with the space, donate books, and take shared ownership—turning a simple wooden cabinet into a symbol of community care.
The latest Little Library installation at Rounds Green Methodist Church will serve local families and children in the surrounding area. Community members are encouraged to:
Each new location expands the network of accessible reading spaces and brings the project closer to its wider goal: fostering a brighter future for children through literacy.

The Little Library initiative is part of Kiwanis Young Professionals UK’s broader commitment to improving the lives of young people. By combining community partnerships, volunteer energy, and a clear focus on children’s wellbeing, the group continues to expand its impact across the region.
With every new installation, the message remains the same: small actions—like sharing a book—can create lasting change.

Every year, Kiwanis Young Professionals UK brings its passion for service and community together in a beautiful moment of solidarity, awareness, and support for families affected by premature birth. The Twinkle for Tots initiative is not just a fundraiser — it’s a community illuminated by hope.
Twinkle for Tots is an illuminated walk event organized by Kiwanis Young Professionals UK that shines a light — literally and figuratively — on Prematurity Awareness Month and the journeys of families with premature babies. It brings together people of all ages to remember, celebrate, and support these tiny warriors and the strength of the families who love them.
Rather than being a fundraiser based on gift-giving or collections, Twinkle for Tots is a community walk with glow sticks, lights, and sparkles where participants come together in public spaces across multiple UK cities. The glow-in-the-dark theme speaks to the light of hope that shines for every child and parent navigating the challenges of early arrival.

In 2025, Twinkle for Tots took place simultaneously in major UK locations — including Barking Park in London, Booth Street Open Space in Birmingham, and Sale Water Park in Manchester — attracting families, volunteers, and supporters who walked together to show solidarity and awareness. AllEvents
These walks are free, family-friendly and open to all, inviting people to bring fairy lights, glow sticks, lanterns or simply their bright spirits to participate in a shared experience of compassion and community.

Prematurity affects thousands of babies every year, and the impact on families is profound — emotionally, physically, and financially. Through Twinkle for Tots, Kiwanis Young Professionals UK helps put a spotlight on prematurity awareness, creating space for discussion, understanding, and community support.
While it’s called a “twinkle walk,” the initiative also encourages conversations around health, family wellbeing and the importance of community support systems for vulnerable families. It’s a reminder that no family should feel alone in their journey.
Kiwanis Young Professionals UK is part of the wider global Kiwanis family — a volunteer service organization dedicated to improving the lives of children and young people. Locally, the club organizes projects and events that bring communities together around meaningful causes, including prematurity awareness through Twinkle for Tots.

Twinkle for Tots fits beautifully within that mission: a joyful, reflective event that enables individuals and families to show up, be seen, and support one another. In doing so, it strengthens community bonds and reinforces the idea that even the smallest lights can make the darkest paths feel brighter.

Young professionals have been busy in their spare time knitting woolly hats for premature babies born at Queen’s Hospital’s neonatal unit.
The hats were made by members of Kiwanis Young Professionals UK which they handed to nurses at the labour ward in Romford.
It was part of their ongoing project to support vulnerable newborns and their families.
“Our volunteers meet regularly to knit and crochet these hats,” the group’s spokesperson Richardo Whyte said.
“It’s our way of showing families that they are not alone — that people in their community care.”
The idea was one of a series of community activities by the Kiwanis UK group in Dagenham.
It is part of an international movement of young professionals with 400,000 members in 80 countries, all in their 20s and 30s who are passionate about giving back through volunteering and community service.
Their handmade baby hats provide warmth for newborns and comfort to their families “during what can be a very challenging time”.
Neonatal paediatric specialist Shawnté James says: “Babies are born out of a warm and cosy environment into one that can be downright chilly. That’s why nurses immediately cover their tiny heads with those precious knitted hats.
“Newborns don’t need to wear a hat all the time when they leave the hospital, unless it’s cold outside.
“But feel free to keep one on if you think your baby looks adorable in a cap, as long as they seem comfortable and don’t get overheated.”
Babies should also not go to bed wearing a woolly hat, doctors advise.
They regulate their body temperature through their heads and overheating can increase their risk of sudden infant death during the night, parents are warned.
The ideal sleeping temperature is said to be between 68 and 72 degrees.
Anyone interested in joining one of the Kiwani young professionals’ upcoming hat-making sessions or generally getting involved can find contact details at kiwanisypuk.co.uk.

🖐️ Whether you’re an experienced knitter or a complete beginner, this event is for everyone. We’ll teach you how to knit a basic wooly hat and bondig square. Looms and yarn will be provided, but feel free to bring your own materials! Traditional knitting methods welcomed!
🍷 Enjoy a glass of wine (Red/White/Rosé) while you stitch. (Let us know in advance if you prefer alcohol free)
💖 Most importantly, we’ll be making hats and bonding squares to support premature babies in hospital. This initiative raises awareness about the unique needs of these tiny warriors and the families who care for them.
A £5 donation will be greatly appreciated to help support our efforts.

Making a Difference: Our Food Drive Challenge 2026 in Action
At Kiwanis Young Professionals United Kingdom, giving back to our community is at the heart of everything we do. As part of our ongoing initiative to tackle food poverty, we continue our Food Drive Challenge — and the response has been nothing short of inspiring.
Across our network, members came together with a shared purpose: to support families facing hardship and ensure that no one in our community goes without essential food supplies. From collecting donations to organising drop-offs, the energy and commitment shown by everyone involved truly highlights the power of collective action.
We’re proud to share that our first round of donations has been successfully delivered to The Source Food Bank in Barking & Dagenham. The contribution included a wide range of essential items — from pantry staples to everyday necessities — all of which will go directly to supporting local families in need.
This is just the beginning.
The Food Drive Challenge is an ongoing effort, and we are already planning further drop-offs to additional food banks that require support. We recognise that food poverty is a continuing issue, and through sustained action, we aim to make a meaningful and lasting impact.
What makes this initiative so special is not just the donations themselves, but the spirit behind them. Every item collected represents kindness, empathy, and a commitment to helping others. Together, we are building stronger communities and showing that even small actions can create significant change.
We would like to thank everyone who has contributed so far — whether by donating, volunteering, or spreading the word. Your support is making a real difference.
As we continue this journey, we welcome anyone who would like to get involved. Together, we can continue to support those who need it most and work towards a future where no family has to worry about their next meal.
Let’s keep the momentum going.
